The following statement is written as a letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, urging him to use his executive power to stop the pipeline. This letter was sent to Tim Walz’s office on June 7th, 2021.

Dear Governor Tim Walz,

The choices you make during these urgent times of climate chaos will determine your legacy as the executive leader of the state of Minnesota. We are reaching a planetary tipping point and your administration’s decision to enable the fossil fuel industry will have impacts and implications far beyond the borders of Minnesota.

Today marks five months since the tragic murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. It feels in some ways as if it only just happened yesterday, and in others it feels years in the past. The grief around his untimely and unjust passing is still fresh and raw; meanwhile, the movement to defend Black lives has seen a tremendous swell of support, and the discourse around systemic racism and police brutality has advanced in a few short months what previously took several years.

Four months ago today, George Floyd was tragically murdered by Minneapolis police. Since that time, we’ve witnessed countless acts of courage in support of the movement to defend Black lives. However, we’ve also witnessed many reasons to continue applying pressure to those in power; for example, with the recent grand jury decision not to criminally charge the police officers who killed Breonna Taylor while she slept in her bed. We at NCFA must therefore yet again extend our deepest sympathies to Breonna Taylor’s loved ones, and reaffirm our solidarity with the BLM movement to honor, defend, and respect Black lives.

We at North Country Food Alliance (NCFA) are inspired by the worldwide action that emerged in support of the movement to defend Black lives during this time. However, in the wake of yet another shooting of an unarmed Black man, we must recognize that as allies we have much yet to accomplish. We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Blake and his loved ones, and express outrage at the white supremacist system that devalues the lives of BlPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) people.

Each month NCFA highlights one organization that is working for the health, well-being, and dignity of Black lives and BIPOC [Black, Indigenous, people of color] communities. This month, we highlight a fundraiser for Plant-Grow-Share, a food justice and community healing program located in the Central neighborhood of South Minneapolis.
